Established in 1890, Spanaway is located in unincorporated Pierce County, Washington, fifteen miles south of Tacoma on State Road 7 and adjacent to the east boundary of Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Spanaway has become a popular place for active duty military personal assigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord as well as locals to buy a home.
Although still primarily suburban and rural, Spanaway is growing every day with new business and new homes. Ten years ago a few neighbors got together to form Celebrate! Spanaway a non-profit that created community awareness, togetherness and helped moved crime out of the historical downtown Spanaway area. They celebrate each year with a huge community fair in the Spanaway Elementary school yard on the second to last weekend in July. Also worthy of mentioning is the Beautiful Spanaway Lake and park newly renovated with miles of walking paths a new play area, beaches and picnic areas. We have a historical cemetery and several buildings, plus all of the conveniences of Wal-Mart and fast food!
